It is important to us at the Lindsey Festival to make sure our support for film making is not just a once-a-year effort, so we are always looking for opportunities for year-round programming. This year, we’ve partnered with other organizations at the University of North Alabama to screen documentaries on such diverse subjects as Wonder Woman and the desegregation of sports at the University of Alabama. On Thursday, February 6, we are partnering with the UNA Women’s Center, The Infinity Project, and the Leading Edge Institute to present “The Invisible War” to the university and the Shoals Community. This Oscar nominated documentary by Academy Award and Emmy nominated director Kirby Dick brings out of the shadows the subject of rape in the US military. The film has been instrumental in starting the public conversation that initiated recent efforts in the US Congress to address problems in how sexual violence is handled. Terri Nelson, a national consultant and educator with expertise in sexual assault and sexual trauma in the US military, will introduce “The Invisible War,” and participate in a panel discussion following the screening. Ms. Nelson is a former Sexual Trauma Counselor with the Department of Veteran Affairs and subject matter expert for the Department of Defense on the development of their sexual assault program and the US Marine Corps on the development of their sexual assault curriculum. Her publications include “For Love of Country: Confronting Rape and Sexual Harassment in the U.S. Military.” Most recently, her company, Sugati Publications, received the national “Impacting Veterans” award from Citi and the Institute for Military Veterans and Families for providing resources to veterans and active duty.
Almost all of us have been touched in some way by sexual violence, and the problems brought to light in “The Invisible War” in providing justice for sexual assault victims are problems encountered in communities and institutions outside of the military. We are pleased to be able to do our part in bringing this film to the Shoals community.
