Films submitted in the annual George Lindsey/University of North Alabama Film Festival are previewed and evaluated by a wide-ranging, specially selected committee of filmmakers and educators. Members of this committee vote “yes” or “no” on each film. If a member of the committee submits a film for judging, he/she is automatically excused from previewing, evaluating, and judging films in the category of submission.
A select number of titles are then distributed to preliminary judges in each category from the student and professional divisions of the competition, from features and short narratives to documentaries and music videos.
During the second stage of the process, teams of preliminary judges (two in each category) view the committee-selected films, rank them in order of preference, and determine which titles will be accepted for public screening during the festival.
For the final phase of the competition, the top three films in each category are reviewed and considered by three nationally known and highly respected film-industry professionals as well as specialists from the field of film criticism, film history and film studies. The three final judges vote independently, and their scores are averaged together to determine Golden Lion Award winners in each category. Winners are determined at least two weeks before the beginning of the festival, but not publicly announced until the festival awards show.
